By Mathew Carr
Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- European Union carbon-dioxide
allowances dropped as the profit from generating power in
Germany using coal next year is near to a two-year low.
EU permits for December dropped 0.7 percent to 15.20 euros
($19.52) a metric ton as of 11:08 a.m. on London's European
Climate Exchange.
The profit made by German utilities burning coal and
selling electricity for next year fell to 5.24 euros a megawatt-
hour today, down from 5.43 euros yesterday, according to
Bloomberg calculations of so-called dark spreads based on
forward prices for fuel, power and carbon allowances. It reached
4.91 euros on May 31, its lowest profit since September 2008.
