EU Forecasts Bigger Share of Renewable Energy, Higher CO2 Price

Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Energy from renewable sources may
account for 32 percent of power generation in the European Union
by 2030, 9 percentage points more than forecast three years
ago, according to a report published by the EU regulator.
"The bulk of the increase in renewable-energy-sources
power corresponds to the deployment of wind onshore, the rising
investment in offshore wind and the considerable development of
solar photovoltaics," the European Commission's Directorate-
General for Energy said in a report.
The study also projected that carbon emissions will fall by
8 percent in 2020 and 20 percent in 2030 from 1990 levels.
"The large part of the reduction in energy-related CO2
emissions is projected to occur in the Emissions Trading System
sectors -- 30 percent from 2005 levels in 2030 -- whereas non-
ETS emissions of CO2 are projected to remain at their 2005
levels in 2020 and decrease by 9 percent in 2030."
The ETS, started in 2005, caps emissions for more than
12,000 factories and power stations, allowing them to buy and
sell allowances. EU carbon prices are projected to rise to 25
euros a metric ton in 2020 and 39 euros in 2030, according to
the baseline scenario in the report.
