U.K. Natural Gas Advances as Halts Cut Imports, Demand Rises
2010-08-02 16:36:40.423 GMT

By Ben Farey
Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. natural gas rose as an import
pipeline from Norway shut, North Sea fields closed for
maintenance and a supply overhang dried up as demand increased.
The Vesterled link from Norway to the U.K. is closed for
three weeks because of maintenance at the St. Fergus terminal in
Scotland, according to Gassco AS, operator of the Nordic
country's gas network.
"The maintenance started yesterday and will be ongoing for
the next 20 days," Gassco spokesman Kjell Varlo Larsen said in
an e-mail. "There will be no flow through Vesterled in this
period."
Gas for September delivery gained 1 pence, or 2.4 percent,
to 43 pence a therm, according to broker data compiled by
Bloomberg at 5:00 p.m. in London. That's equal to $6.83 a
million British thermal units. A therm is 100,000 Btus. The
contract earlier fell as much as 5.4 percent to 39.75 pence.
BP Plc plans to shut its North Sea Unity Riser platform
today for planned maintenance, potentially halting output from
at least 18 fields in U.K. waters. BP wasn't immediately
available to say if the riser had closed.
Deliveries into the Bacton Seal terminal in eastern England
halted due to the planned maintenance, grid data show. The
pipeline receives gas from Total SA's Elgin-Franklin deposits
among others.
Demand for gas in the 24-hour period through 6 a.m.
tomorrow will be 209 million cubic meters, about 10 million more
than an earlier forecast, according to National Grid Plc. The
nation's pipelines will hold 335 million cubic meters at 6 a.m.
tomorrow, 1 million more than at the start of today. Earlier a
surplus of 16 million was forecast.

Pipeline Closure

Transitgas AG's pipeline across Switzerland to Italy will
remain closed until Aug. 9 after thunderstorms increased the
risk of damage to the link from landslides. The outage has
increased supplies to Britain as there's no other route to Italy
for gas from northern Europe.
Gas for today gained 1 pence to 43.5 pence a therm.
Winter gas, to be delivered in the six months through
March, advanced 2.55 pence to 52.25 pence a therm.
The U.K.'s Dragon and Isle of Grain liquefied natural gas
terminals will receive two additional cargoes of the fuel this
month, ship-tracking and port data showed today, on Aug. 7 and
Aug. 11.
Bloomberg compiles prices from brokers including ICAP Plc,
GFI Group Inc. and Spectron Group Ltd.
