Aug. 11 (Bloomberg New Energy Finance) -- India's Tata
Power Company Ltd. failed in a bid to get carbon credits for its
4,000-megawatt coal-fired plant at Mundra in Gujarat state.
The Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism
rejected the company's application at a meeting held in the last
week of July, according to an update on the website of the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Tata Power had projected emission reductions of 26.52
million metric tons of carbon dioxide over a 10-year period
ending in December 2020. This would have meant additional
revenue of 318 million euros ($414 million) at the current
certified emission reduction price of about 12 euros.
A company spokesman declined to comment.
The Mundra plant is being BUILT by a special purpose
vehicle, Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary
of Tata Power, using "super-critical" technology. This
technology uses less coal per megawatt of output.
No super-critical plant is currently operating in India.
