China to Establish Carbon Emissions Center in Greece, Wen Says

Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- China plans to establish a research
center based at the Greek port of Piraeus to cut carbon
emissions in international shipping, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao
said yesterday.
"We must make every effort in the area of saving energy
and reducing carbon emissions," Wen said during a visit to
Piraeus, where Cosco Pacific Ltd., Asia's third-biggest
container terminal operator, has a 35-year concession to run
some operations. Wen said China has "agreed with the Greek side
to establish a research center," according to an e-mailed
transcript of his statements from the Greek prime minister's
office.
Wen yesterday pledged to deepen relations with Greece and
the European Union, saying China would buy Greek bonds and
support its shipping industry through a $5 billion shipping fund
to facilitate the sale of Chinese vessels to Greece, the largest
ship-owning nation.
Cosco Pacific won the concession to run container
operations at Piraeus Port's Pier II and build and run a third
pier in 2009. Greece's government owns 75 percent of Piraeus
Port Authority SA, the company that manages the harbor. China
plans to move 3.7 million containers a year through Piraeus by
2015 from 800,000 this year.
