Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K. government may adjust a
program aimed at cutting carbon-dioxide emissions from
businesses, schools and councils, according to Climate Change
Minister Greg Barker.
The U.K. has been "looking at whether the application is
suitable," Barker said today in an interview in London. "There
may be ways of improving" how companies comply with emissions
targets, he said. The government will make an announcement about
the program in a few weeks, he said.
British companies have until Sept. 30 to register for the
program, called the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy
Efficiency Scheme, or CRC. It requires the country's biggest
energy users to report their emissions and trade permits to
release carbon dioxide. A third of the estimated 20,000
companies that need to sign up may miss the deadline and face
fines, the consultant WSP Environment & Energy said in July.
