Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- China, the world's biggest coal user
and producer, may import record volumes in November and December
because of robust winter demand, according to New York-based
Commodore Research & Consultancy.
Coal imports may reach 16.75 million metric tons in
November and 17.25 million tons in December, Jeffrey Landsberg,
president of Commodore, said in an e-mailed report. China's
record monthly import volume is 16.38 million tons in December
2009, according to data from the Beijing-based General
Administration of Customs.
China's coal consumption typically rises during winter and
spring because of heating demand. Temperatures in northeastern
cities including Harbin and Changchun have fallen below freezing
point (32 degrees Fahrenheit) as a cold front sweeps across
northern China, bringing snow and rain, the National
Meteorological Center said today.
Fifteen vessels were chartered to ship power-plant coal to
China last week, more than the 12 on average booked during the
period Oct. 8 to Oct. 29, Landsberg said in the report.
