Dec. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Papua New Guinea, the island nation,
proposed to United Nations climate-protection envoys that the
Clean Development Mechanism extend beyond 2012, the last year
with targets under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
Certifed Emission Reductions "can continue to be created
and may be used in the trading of units after Dec. 31, 2012,"
according to a draft text handed today to reporters by Andrei
Marcu at talks in Cancun, Mexico.
Marcu, helping to represent the country at this month's
climate talks, was previously head of the International
Emissions Trading Association. The CDM is the world's second-
biggest carbon market after the European Union cap-and-trade
program.
