Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- The United Nations climate chief,
Christiana Figueres, sought tighter emission targets from
nations to give the world a chance of limiting climate change.
Assuming all previously announced targets and actions are
fully implemented, UN estimates show they'd deliver only 60
percent of the reductions that scientists estimate will be
needed to stay below an agreed goal of 2 degrees Celsius (3.6
Fahrenheit) of warming, the UN Framework Convention on Climate
Change said in an e-mailed statement today.
"All countries, but particularly industrialized nations,
need to deepen their emission reduction efforts and to do so
quickly," said Figueres, the executive secretary of the UNFCCC,
according to the statement.
