July 20 (Bloomberg) -- Europe is headed for a record year
for installation of offshore wind turbines, led by E.ON AG and
Dong Energy A/S, the European Wind Energy Association said.
In the first half of 2010, sea-based wind power turbines
with the capacity to generate 333 megawatts was connected to the
grid across Europe, compared with 577 megawatts during the whole
of 2009, the Brussels-based lobby group said today in an e-
mailed statement. A megawatt can supply about 650 typical U.K.
households.
"Despite the financial crisis, offshore wind continues to
be a major growth industry," EWEA Director of Policy Justin
Wilkes said. "I am confident are heading for a record year."
E.ON of Germany developed 64 percent of the grid-connected
offshore capacity this year, followed by Dong on 21 percent and
Vattenfall AB on 11 percent, the group said. Siemens AG was top
turbine maker, followed by Vestas Wind Systems A/S, it said.
The U.K. accounts for half of the wind farms installed this
year, the trade group Renewable UK said in a separate statement
today. The island nation, which has more than 1 gigawatt of
offshore wind capacity, now accounts for about 40 percent of the
European total, it said.
