Russia Approves 15 Projects for Carbon Credits, Ministry Says

By Maria Levitov
July 26 (Bloomberg) -- Russia approved 15 projects for
carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol, an official in the
Economy Ministry said today.
They were chosen from about 40 bids submitted to OAO
Sberbank, the government's agent for emissions trading, Oleg
Pluzhnikov, deputy chief in the energy-efficiency department,
said in an e-mailed response to questions. He declined to
elaborate on the approvals, first reported by Point Carbon.
Russia, the world's third-largest polluter after China and
the U.S., has been slow to apply for carbon credits amid delays
in climate legislation. The government picked Sberbank, the
nation's largest lender, to run tenders for emission-reduction
projects with the Economy Ministry.
The 15 projects may produce as much as 30 million metric
tons of United Nations offsets known as Emission Reduction
Units. Oil and gas producers submitted a third of the bids, and
metals companies submitted 22 percent, Vsevolod Gavrilov, head
of carbon projects at Moscow-based msg Sberbank, said in March.
Billionaire Oleg Deripaska's EN+ Group, OAO Magnitogorsk
Iron & Steel, BP Plc's oil venture, Moscow-based chemicals
producer OAO Sibur Holding and OAO Rosneft, Russia's biggest oil
producer, were among the applicants.
